bare_bear: (ohwell)
Well, I'm back in the field again for a couple days.  This was a surprise, because I wasn't supposed to leave until Thursday, and only for the day.  Instead, I left today after work and drove the 3 hour trip to the town my site is in.  Plus they added another project for Thursday, so I won't even be getting home until that night.

This is putting a kink into my 3 letters a week plan.  Especially since I was planning to stop at the post office this evening after work to get a US stamp.  That went out the window.  Oh well, I can still send out my letters Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

This is why I didn't commit to a letter every day.  *headdesk*

Anywho, it's nice to be in the field.  I've been stuck in front of a computer most of the time lately, and escaping is lovely.  :D

Well, I've definately dropped the ball with posting again, haven't I.  :)

The last 2 month and the next couple, in summary:

- Survived first round of field work.  Was relatively successful, and I'm pretty pleased with it's results.  Not so much with one of the labs dropping the ball with some of my water samples.  :P
- Oh my gosh so much writing this last month.  Term paper, report of activities, and a proposal (which will be finished tonight, I swear!).  I hate writing.  Why the heck am I doing a masters again?
- Reconnected with an old friend and going on an awesome road trip with them in September.  Am rather twitterpated, actually.  ;)
- Leaving tomorrow to celebrate/mourn a friend defending her masters thesis.  Wine will be drunk and good times will be had.
- Friday flying off to Nova Scotia to be a field lacky for a friend.  So excited, since I've never been to the east coast before.  Heck, I've never seen the ocean from the Canadian side at all.  Might even jump in!  Also, BAY OF FUNDY!  :D  Such a geo-geek.  Oh, also doing field work on arsenic-rich tailings.  Right.  Work.  ;)
- 4 days after getting back from Nova Scotia, will be off again for another round of sampling at Terra Mine.  :D  WHEE MORE FIELD WORK!
- Right after that, road trip to Manitoba, followed by a wedding and lots of friends and family!  YAAAY!

So so very excited for this next month-and-a-half!  :D

Oh gosh sick.  Soooo sick.  Not fair to catch a cold while doing fieldwork.  Blllargh.

Arrived in camp at 11 am.  By 4 pm had seen 2 bears.

And our bear fence isn't working.

*eyes previous entry*  I should not be allowed to make posts at 3 am while stressed.  3 am posts while drunk are another matter entirely!  :D

Am in Yellowknife right now, and the sun. does. not. set.  EVER.  Strange to see, and very confusing.  Last night at about 9 pm (Yellowknife time), I was talking to Mom, where it's 10 pm (Manitoba time), telling her that it feels like 11 pm (Kingston time), but it LOOKS LIKE 4 PM OUTSIDE.  My internal clock was really messed up.  Didn't help that we'd been up since 6 am (Kingston time).  OH GOD TIME TRAVEL IS CONFUSING.

Otherwise things are going well here.  The exciting bit is I found out that Jay Ingram from Daily Planet is going to be here doing a book signing on Saturday!  SO EXCITED but I will refrain from fangirling too much.  :D  I plan to buy a book and get him to sign it.  And maybe get a signature for a buddy of mine since she loves that show too.  :)  It'll make her day, anyways.

Can't wait to go north to the mine site.  Picked up a fishing rod this afternoon so we can spend the evenings fishing!  HERE FISHY FISHY FISHY!  :D

FIELD WORK TIME!  Yep, tomorrow we drive up to Ottawa, and the next morning fly into Yellowknife.  WHEEE 10 HOURS OF TRAVELLING!

Man, it's quicker to get to the UK from here.  Canada is REALLY BIG.  Of course, it doesn't help that apparently Calgary is on the way to Yellowknife from Ottawa.  I'll never understand airlines.

But!  I'm quite excited.  My bag is totally not packed at all and I have a stupid term paper due that doesn't want to be written, but that's fine because NWT, HERE I COME!

:D

O-kay, sleep time for me, I think.  Oh god tomorrow is almost here.  Bed time!

(I am not drunk, just over tired and over excited!)

3 1/2 weeks before take off. Soooo much work to do before then! ACK!

I'm currently prepping peepers (in-situ pore water sampling apparatus), and although the first set is percolating away nicely in nitrogen, the other set is being stubborn. Frustrating like whoa!

This is good experience, even if it is frustrating. I never realized just how much small stuff needs to be organized in something like this. If I get nothing else out of this experience, it'll be how to be and keep organized! :D

Okay, back to work.

Field work planning is hard. Especially when you're going to a remote area of the Northwest Territories and can't exactly pop down to the local store to pick up batteries. *stresses about MASSIVE packing and to-do lists*

On another note, fun new lj community: [profile] myfsckingkeys They helped me find the bic pencils that my stupid desk keeps eating.
