Oh cripes, I've re-written this thing about 12 times now, and it's all long-winded and annoying and utterly utterly BORING.  Maybe that says something about my life.  More likely, it says something about my lack of writing skills.  This does not bode well for my thesis writing.

Or maybe it does because I keep breaking my life down to the boring boring facts.

Anywho, I'm trying this one more time, keeping this short and sweet (instead of the mammoth book it keeps winding up being), mostly because you'll hear more about the details in the coming days.

So, as many of you know, my name is Heather.  I'm a Masters graduate student at a university in southern Ontario studying geochemistry.  No, I'm not going to do a PhD, but thanks for asking.  Mostly, this degree is a hoop for me to jump through in order to get into the career path that I want, namely doing mine site remediation.  And what a hoop this has been!  I've only barely passed every chemistry class I took in my undergrad, so it's been quite the challenge.  ;D  I'm looking forward to finishing this degree and moving back to the prairies where the weather knows what it's about.  I miss -40 degree winters.  And my family, of course.  They're the main reason I'm headed home when I finish.  I'd planned to go elsewhere, maybe to the arctic for a couple years, but my Mom asked me to come home for a while at least, so home I go.

I'm not going into all the deep analysis of who I am and how I came to be.  Every time I try, it explodes into a dreadfully boring book of Heather babbles, so I'm just not.  But I will tell you about one more thing that's a very important part of my life right now.  While I've always loved crafting and making things by hand, I've recently discovered a passion for sewing.  Those of you reading my journal for the last year may remember this, as I started to post my projects on here before starting up a sewing blog on blogspot.  I love sewing, love the idea of taking a 2 dimensional piece of fabric and molding it into a fashionable and useful article of clothing or accessory.  I love being able to wear something I made, and how that gives control over how I look and what my clothes say about me back into my hands instead of the clothing manufacturers who can't or won't deal with proper fit if you're not a specific shape.

And finally, one more little tidbit.  I love being Canadian.  I love our big beautiful country and the hilarious reputation for being friendly and able to laugh at ourselves, and I try very hard to maintain that stereotype in my own life.  However, it is frequently sabotaged by the crotchety, dirty old man that I suspect lives in my head.  At least, I blame him for all my grumpy mood swings.  But at least I'm still able to laugh at myself when I'm under the influence of my internal grumpy old man!

Anywho, that's the major points: name, current and future occupation, and my hobby.  Maybe it doesn't tell you much about who I am, but you'll definitely learn more about these topics and more about me and my life in the next 30 days.  Cheers!  :D
