Pride and Prejudice (san Zombies)

One of my methods of keeping myself focused on writing is to put on a movie I've seen a bajillion times and know inside and out as background noise. It's handy, despite sounding distracting, since I don't need to watch it to know what's going on, and doesn't keep me twitching to surf the internet while bored, especially since I can take a moment break and watch the show without getting hung up in it.
There are exactly 2 movies right now that works for this, and my favourite one is BBC Pride and Prejudice (yes, the one with Colin Firth). I LOVE this movie, and have watched the whole thing hundreds of times in the 6 or 7 years I've owned it.
The scene where Elizabeth and Darcy dance at the Netherfield Ball is probably my favourite scene in film, hands down, and I always have to stop what I'm doing to watch it. Something about the flow of it, the elegant battle between Elizabeth and Darcy that is hidden beneath a civilized dance is just thrilling to watch, and it makes me giddy every time. EVERY TIME.
And the confrontation between Elizabeth and Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the Longbourn garden is my favourite scene in literature. I can nearly quote the whole thing by memory.
I sort of love Pride and Prejudice. <3
But cripes, in the hundreds of times I've watched this movie, I've never noticed that poor awkward Mary Bennett was crazy for Mr. Collins! I was taking a break during the scene where the Bennett family receives the invitation to the Netherfield Ball, and I noticed that Mary is hovering and making doe eyes at Mr. Collins. It's the only time I've ever seen her smile, or that I've noticed so far. When he says he expects to dance with all his fair cousins, Mary - who never dances ("I would infinitely prefer a book") - looks nervous and almost excited. When he requests the first two dances from Elizabeth, he first turns to Mary and she looks so hopeful and breathless, until he turns to make the request to Elizabeth, and Mary's whole demeanor just drops. The poor thing is just devastated, especially since she's always passed over for her prettier and more outgoing sisters.
I've always loved Mary Bennett, despite her lack of significant presence in the film and book, and now I feel so much more for the poor thing. I am very impressed with how subtly Lucy Briers plays the part (she has an amazingly expressive face), and now I think I need to watch the show and just watch for Mary in the movie. And poor me, should probably re-read the book and see what I can tease out of it on the character.
Woe.
DAMMIT, I don't have my Darcy icon uploaded anymore!. :( Although I saw a great one floating around somewhere (maybe on Sam's Cafe?) of a cartoon drawing of Mary saying "I would infinitely prefer a book". Maybe I should track it down and see if I can use it. :D

redscharlach has made a ton of P&P icons, and similar ones for other fandoms, such as Doctor Who, Torchwood, Star Trek, Sherlock Holmes, and a bunch others. Definitely check them out, they're adorable!
