May. 10th, 2012 06:08 pmI shared a graphic on facebook that I came across the other day that takes a shot at North Carolina, where it states "North Carolina: Where you can marry your cousin, just not your gay cousin". It was more a shot to vent my frustration at the results of the vote there, and while it's technically true, I've since recognized that I was wrong to do so. While I wasn't called out individually, a woman that I respect greatly and who strongly supports equal rights recently called people out about this. As she said, love is love, and if you propose equality in marrying the person that you love, taking pot shots at a law that allows marriage between cousins isn't the way to do it. You can't stop hate with hate.
I know the graphic I shared wasn't as bad as many of the jokes and insults made, and I do believe that people should be vocal about things this sort of inequity. However, making snide jokes or remarks about it isn't the way to do it, and I've since removed it. I've also posted this message on facebook to reach those who liked (or didnt like) my share. I'm sorry to anyone that I've inadvertantly hurt by it.
Thanks
maderr, for the reality check.
