Olympic Opening Ceremonies!

I always seem to miss the opening ceremonies, but I'm making it a point to watch them tonight.  I mean, how can I not?  It's in my home country.

I know it's a silly thing, but I love love love when I see the Royal Canadian Mounted Police representing Canada at events.  From small town rodeos to the opening ceremonies at the Olympics, it always fills my heart with pride and joy.  :)  And to see them marching in carrying the Canadian flag, it's seriously bringing me to tears.  *waves little Canadian flag*

YAY for the Canadian Military in Kandahar!  So glad they can watch!

Okay, the native people welcoming?  Maybe the GINORMOUS statues are cheezy, but the whole thing is giving me the shivers!  So glad they included the nod to many of the aboriginal cultures in our country.  WHOOOO GO METIS!!!  GO INUIT!!!  (can you tell what my family is?  :D)  I love it, all of it!  I don't care what people will say about it.

Random athlete march comments (a bunch of which got eaten by my stupid computer, but I'll try to remember what I wrote):
  • Australia has such a big team for such a warm country.  ETA: Heh, my cousin, who's over there right now, says the Aussies are crazy about the games.  They keep giving her and her friends slack for being here when the games are going on back home.  They're considering claiming their Swiss or something, since it's getting a little annoying.  She says that, but I don't believe her!
  • The Cayman Islands?  lol!  Welcome to your first winter olympics!
  • North Korea?  Huh, wasn't expecting that.  Welcome!
  • Oh Georgia.  My deepest condolences for Nodar Kumaritashvili.  I'm so glad you decided to march tonight, and I'm sad to see you go.
  • Ghana!  Wow!  You go!  I'll be cheering for you!
  • Aw, what a nice story about the Indian athletes!  They arrived without matching uniforms, and I think they said the Indian communities here pitched in and got them matching uniforms and funds for training and such!
  • Israel!  Hah, I love that the Canadians built a skating rink there!
  • ITALY!!!  GO GO GO!
  • Jamaca!  Hahaha!  They're talking about the Jamacan bobsled team from '88 Olympics, inspiring the movie Cool Runnings.  It's one of my favourite movies!  Now I wanna watch it.
  • I love the Kazakstan flag bearers uniform!  The hat's super neat!
  • SOUTH KOREA!!!
  • (The aboriginal dancers must be getting tired!  They've been dancing this whole time!)
  • The Mexican flag barer is 51 years old and the announcer said he interviewed him 25 years ago!  :)  I hope you show them who's boss on the downhill skiing!
  • Mongolia chose a woman to be the flag-barer because they want to encourage more girls to get into sports!  That makes me smile so so big!
  • Hah!  The Nepal's flag-barer has climbed Mount Everest!  Neat!
  • Welcome to your first winter Olympics Pakistan!
  • HOLY COW!  178 Russian athletes!  Oh crap, they have issues with some athletes testing positive to some illegal substances of some sort.  And they're still here.  Hmmm...
  • Ooo!  I like the look of the Slovakian's outfits, the white jackets and caps with the long black and red scarves.  looks really sharp.
  • Yeah Sweden!  Yay Switzerland!!!
  • Wow!  The Turkey figure skater who is carrying the flag moved to Barrie Ontario when she was 12.  Her parents couldn't get tickets to come see her here in Vancouver, and an annonomous donor gave them tickets after an article was written about her.  :)  I love when that happens.
  • ACK!  216 athletes for the United States.  GO USA!  :D  Ooo, I like their touques!
  • GO CANADA GO!!!!! WOWOOOO HOOOOOO!!!  Clara Hughes is the flag barer!  :D  Oh wow, so so proud of my country!  I want one of those Canada scarves!  :D  Oh man, tearing up here.  So ridiculously proud.
I can't imagine how proud you must be to be able to do the athletes march!  Congrats to you all!

Nelly Furtado and Brian Adams singing together?  The song was pretty good (and oh man, Brian Adams voice!), but Nelly?  WTH was with that stripper walk across the stage?  Oh but man that woman has a nice ass.  Love the native dances, though.  I love when they dance with the rings!  They all looked so happy too!  :D

Oooh, I love the Hymn to the North!  Hahaha!  The bear puppet is kind of funny, actually, but pretty neat anyways!  *refrains from shouting 'IT'S GODZILLA'*  I'll die if it starts dancing.  Oh, the ice is cracking, dividing the community.  Wow, the wales is amazing!  Oh gosh, i can't imagine what that'd be like to see live.  Oooh, the trees look really neat.

The ballet is really neat...and the dances are floating to the ceiling holy cow!  Wow!  The moon looks so neat!  Okay, fiddling to represent the fall.  I love fiddlers and tapping!   The rock and jazz inspired song and costumes are great!  I especially like the fiddler with the mohawk!  Okay, this is so cool.  I can barely take my eyes from the screen.

I'm so amazed by the emphasis on our heritage!  I can't imagine what other countries think of all this, but I'm just loving it (obviously).

Hahaha!  I love the birth of the Rocky Mountains!  The skaters and flying skiiers/boarders is really awesome!

Poem: "We are more" - "Some say what defines us is 'Please' and 'Thank You'" (and the crowd goes wild)  "And yes, we say 'zed', not 'zee'".  :D  "We are choices, we are millions and millions of voices, we are more".  "WE ARE THE TRUE NORTH, STRONG AND FREE"  "And what more, we didn't just say it, we made it be".  WOW.  Definitely need to track that down once it hits the web.

I love K.D. Langs voice.

Well, I'm sad to see that there was some technical glitches right at the end with the columns for the final torch lighting ceremony, but ti was still pretty epic.  Plus Catrina Le May Doan and Wayne Gretzky!!!  And hey, it looks like Wayne is running...oh no, nope, he's being transported to light the 2nd external cauldron.  Wow, I didn't realize that the Olympic torch relay across Canada reached 90% of the population within an hours drive of the route.  That's amazing.  I wish I'd made it out when it came through Kingston, but I'd totally forgotten about it.

Hahaha!  It's raining in Vancouver!  Oh man, Canadian weather, stay crazy and unpredictable.

I love all the people running along side of the truck carrying Wayne Gretzky.  :)

And there goes the outdoor Olympic Flame!  Wow!  I thought for a moment there it wasn't going to light!  Heh!

Good job Vancouver!  I know there's lots of negativity on the web about it, but it was a beautiful, emotional, inspiring ceremony, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  *tips hat at the Olympic organizers and all those involved in the project.
Well, that wasn't the best review of the Olympic opening ceremonies out there, but it was fun to share my thoughts!
